Christmas – A Biography

JUDITH FLANDERS – CHRISTMAS: A BIOGRAPHY

TUESDAY 4 DECEMBERChristmas has been all things to all people: a religious festival, a family celebration, a time of eating and drinking. Yet the origins which characterise the festive season are wreathed in myth. When did turkeys become the plat du jour? Join acclaimed social historian and best-selling author Judith Flanders for some festive fun as she casts a sharp and revealing eye on the myths, legends and history of the season. There will also be an opportunity to buy signed copies of Judith’s latest book, Christmas: A Biography at the end of the talk. A perfect Christmas present. Includes sparkling wine and mince pie on arrival.

On foot or bicycle

There are a number of pedestrian and cycle entrances to the park on Lionel Road, Popes Lane and the A406, North Circular Road. Bike racks can be found near the café – remember to bring a lock with you.

By Tube

Acton Town Tube Station (Piccadilly and District lines) Turn left when you leave the station and walk along Gunnersbury Lane for about ten minutes, crossing the A406. There is a side entrance to the park just down from this junction. South Ealing Tube Station (Piccadilly line) Turn right onto South Ealing Road and then left onto Popes Lane (about ten minutes’ walk). The Lionel Road entrance is currently closed due to construction work so continue along Popes Lane until you reach the ornate gates. Alternatively, you can catch the E3 bus travelling towards Acton Town which will drop you outside the Popes Lane entrance.

By train

Kew Bridge Rail Station (South Western Railway) Turn left out of the station and almost immediately turn left again along Lionel Road South. Use the pedestrian crossing to cross the A4 Great West Road. Bear left towards Lionel Road North and the southern park gate will be on your right. (about ten minutes’ walk).

By bus

Travelling from Acton Town direction, the E3 stops by the Popes Lane entrance to the park. Travelling from South Ealing direction, the 65 route goes along South Ealing Road. Please note that you will then need to walk along Popes Lane or catch the E3 travelling towards Acton Town. Travelling from Hounslow or Hammersmith, the H91 route stops along the A4 Great West Road. From here there are three entrances to the park.

By car

There is a small, free car park accessible via Popes Lane. Look for the lane signed Gunnersbury Park and Capel Manor College. The car park is approximate five to ten minutes’ walk from the café and museum. Car parking for disabled visitors is available next to the museum on a first come first served basis. Turn in through the ornate gates on Popes Lane and follow the signs.
